A password protects your personal and important data on your computer, tablet, and smartphone. It also secures access to your email account, social media, and cloud data. After all, you don’t want a stranger sending inappropriate messages to your Facebook friends via your phone, or a hacker committing identity fraud.
Still, many people use passwords like password, 123456, azerty, or their name and birth year. That’s a bad idea, because such simple passwords are easily hacked with basic software. The golden rule for passwords is: the longer your password, the safer it is. Also, use different passwords for different purposes. There are various online tools to test how strong your password is. But why take the risk? With two-factor authentication, you add an extra security layer, making it much harder — if not impossible — for hackers.
What is Two-Factor Authentication?
To access your account, you must prove that you are who you claim to be. This can be done in three ways, or with three factors:
- With something only you know (your password or PIN code),
- With something only you have (your phone or token),
- With something you are (your fingerprint, face, iris …).
Usually, you use one of these factors — often a password — to prove your identity. But it is safer to use two or more factors: this is two- or multi-factor authentication (2FA or MFA). For example, you use a password and also receive a code on your phone, or you combine your fingerprint with an app to gain access.
